Indie music can be just about whatever you want it to be, which is kind of the point. Traditionally, it refers to artists who release music through a label that is not chiefly owned by one of the big three, but over the past decade, indie defines more of a sound and style than a principle. From Arcade Fire to Modest Mouse, from Mac Demarco to Phoebe Bridgers, and even encompassing some underground hip-hop with the likes of Aesop Rock and the late great MF DOOM.
