AUBURN, Ala. - The 11th-ranked Auburn Tigers kept the momentum rolling on Saturday night, beating the No. 3 LSU Tigers 4-2. The win gives the Tigers their fourth SEC series win in their first five chances.
Coming off a complete win on Friday night, the Tigers once again put together all phases of the game to earn the win. Florida transfer Cade Fisher got another Saturday start and put in his best outing of the year. For the first time in an Auburn uniform, Fisher threw five innings. He gave up just three hits, one earned run, and totaled six punchouts while controlling the ball well.
There was no let-up from the pitching staff as Auburn got into their bullpen. It felt as though everything had gone according to pitching coach Everett Teaford’s plan. After the strong showing from Fisher, veteran reliever John Armstrong entered and delivered 1.2 scoreless innings in relief.
After Armstrong found himself in a bit of trouble in the seventh inning, the ball was given to Ryan Hetzler to try to get the two-plus inning save. It took Hetzler just three pitches to work out of the frame and leave the LSU Tigers stranded. Hetzler then found himself in more trouble in the eighth, but worked out of it with minimal damage done, preserving a two-run lead with just three outs to get. Those three outs came with no stress, starting with a three-pitch strikeout of the SEC’s sixth-best hitter, Jared Jones. Tiger pitching struck Jones out three times in his five at-bats.
At the plate, Auburn was out-hit by LSU but scratched across runs when it mattered. The Tigers plated two in the fourth and fifth innings to give them their four runs. Ike Irish came up big yet again with a double to left center that scored Eric Snow and tied the game at one. One batter later, McMurray doubled to bring Irish around and take a 2-1 lead. In the next frame, USF transfer Snow continued his stellar season at the plate, homering to center and scoring two. He’s now hitting .311 after his 2-4 day at the plate. Freshman stud Chris Rembert added two hits, as Auburn’s top four in the lineup contributed all seven knocks and all four RBIs.
After one of the worst seasons in SEC history, the Tigers are now riding red-hot form to start the SEC slate in 2025. They now have eight conference wins, matching their total from a season ago just five series’ into conference play.
It was also a historic night for Plainsman Park, as its attendance record was set for the second straight night. A total of 7,231 people filed in to watch the Tigers of Auburn outlast the Tigers from LSU.
Auburn will go for the series sweep tomorrow afternoon. The first pitch is set for 2 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on ESPN+ and the Auburn Sports Network.
