AUBURN, Ala. – The Auburn Tigers (25-15) defeated the UAB Blazers (16-21) 6-1 in game one of a doubleheader on Wednesday at Jane B. Moore Field behind a career game from senior pitcher Haley Rainey.
Tigers pitcher Haley Rainey pitched what was, without question, her best performance in an Auburn uniform, going six innings while giving up four hits and one unearned run. While Rainey only recorded one strikeout, her philosophy as a groundball pitcher produced weak contact from Blazers’ hitters. Rainey’s performance improved her record to 4-3 and lowered her ERA to 3.69.
The Tigers capitalized on the Blazers' mistakes in this one, recording just five hits and scoring three runs after the Blazers’ errors. In a sloppy game on both sides, the Tigers committed two errors of their own, but neither led to any runs scored. The Tigers' taking advantage of the Blazers’ errors proved to be the catalyst for their victory.
Senior outfielder Icess Tresvik led the offensive production for the Tigers, going 2-2 with two RBIs. Tresvik has been a steady killer in the Tigers' lineup all season, hitting .317 with eight long balls to share the team lead. The Tigers' cleanup hitter came through once again and will look to continue to provide a spark in the lineup in game two.
Tresvik will also get the start on the mound for game two, as she looks to carry her momentum from the plate to the circle.
First pitch for game two will be at 6:05 p.m. at Jane B. Moore Field, as the Tigers look to go 2-0 on the day. The game will be broadcast on WEGL 91.1 FM and on the Auburn Sports Network, with Jacob Hillman and Cohen Dalzell on the call.
