AUBURN, Ala. - A six-run seventh inning after a rain delay Friday and a great performance in the circle from SJ Geurin Saturday helped Auburn clinch the series early before South Carolina was able to take the finale and limit the Tiger offense Sunday.
Auburn (30-21) took on No. 13 South Carolina (36-13) at Jane B. Moore field for their last series in conference play this season. It was a crucial weekend for the Tigers, as their postseason hopes were heavily dependent on how they fared against the Gamecocks this weekend.
In the opener, things looked to be off to a rough start, as Auburn was down 7-2 heading into the seventh, but a 90-minute rain delay must have awoken something in the offense, as they scored six runs to steal a win over the USC of the south. Amelia Lech had the walk off two-RBI single. Rose Roach, AnnaLea Adams, and KK McCrary also had clutch hits as well.
Saturday’s game, while not as thrilling, showed the Tigers at their best as they blanked the Gamecocks and put up seven runs of their own. Auburn’s workhorse SJ Geurin pitched a complete game shutout and only allowed one hit while picking up three strikeouts. Adams, McCrary, and Anna Wohlers all had multi-hit games.
After a satisfying series clinch, Auburn's offense fell flat during game three. While Auburn outhit SC, the walks ended up being the difference.
Still, the series was overall a success for Auburn, as they look to make the postseason in the first year of the Malveaux era. They also could be playing in the SEC tournament, but they need Georgia to take the series against Missouri next weekend.
Auburn has their bye weekend for conference play so instead they will host NC State this weekend at Jane B. Moore field, including Senior day which will be Saturday. The first pitch is set for 6 p.m. CDT and can be watched on SEC Network+ or listened to on WEGL 91.1 FM.
