AUSTIN, Texas - The No. 23 Auburn Tigers fell to the Texas Longhorns 12-2 in game one of their three-game series, with the Longhorns riding an eight-run fourth inning to propel them to a run-rule victory.
The Longhorns jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in this one, scoring three in the first and one in the second before their eight-run eruption in the fourth. The Tigers were held in check for most of the game, scoring two runs in the final inning when the run-rule was already in effect, as Longhorns starter Teagan Kavan went four innings and only gave up two hits. The Longhorns then gave the ball to Cambria Salmon to close the game out, and she surrendered two before retiring the side and handing the Tigers their seventh consecutive SEC loss.
The Tigers pitching staff had a rough outing as a whole against the stout Longhorns lineup. Each pitcher for the Tigers gave up four earned runs, with starter Hailey Rainey carrying home the loss after going just 2.1 innings. The Tigers pitching has struggled as of late, and is one of the reasons for their seven-game SEC losing streak.
The Longhorns bats started hot and stayed hot, setting the tone with back-to-back home runs in the first inning by Reese Atwood adn Joley Mitchell. The Longhorns piled up six extra base hits, and it would’ve been more if it wasn’t for the Tigers defense making a few stellar plays.
While Texas celebrates its game one victory, the reeling Tigers search desperately for answers.
First pitch for game two of the series between Auburn and Texas is slated for 2 p.m. and will be broadcast on SECN+ as well as WEGL 91.1 FM.
