No. 11 Auburn swept by No. 2 Georgia

AUBURN, Ala. —  No. 11 Auburn (20-8, 4-5) dropped both double-header games Saturday against No. 2 Georgia. The Tigers led in both games but ultimately squandered the lead, losing 11-7 in the day's first game and 9-6 in the second. The Bulldogs swept the Tigers in the overall weekend series.

“I thought we did a nice job coming back after game one…,” Auburn head coach Butch Thompson said. “We want to be what they are, and in the moment we just didn’t link it up enough.”

Auburn started game one on Saturday strong. Starter Cade Fisher threw four innings allowing just one hit and zero earned runs, and Bristol Carter gave Auburn a 1-0 lead in the third inning with a solo home run. The tide turned, however, in the fifth inning.

The Bulldogs scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead. Auburn responded with a five-run sixth inning to tie it back up before Georgia added four more in the bottom of the frame. The Bulldogs’s bullpen then shut the door on the Tigers to seal the victory.

Looking to avoid the series sweep in game two of the doubleheader, Auburn jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a solo home run from Ike Irish in the top of the first inning. Auburn and Georgia went back and forth throughout the game and Auburn trailed by one entering the ninth inning.

Auburn tied the game in the ninth and forced the game into extra innings. Bub Turrell hit a two-run home run in the top of the tenth to give Auburn the lead, but Georgia ultimately walked it off in the bottom of the tenth.

After winning the first two series in SEC play, the Tigers were swept by an excellent Bulldogs team. Auburn returns to action Tuesday against UAB at Plainsman Park. The first pitch is set for 6:00 PM and will air on the Auburn Sports Network and SECN+.
