LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Auburn Tigers (19-5, 4-2) offense turned cold Sunday afternoon, falling to the Kentucky Wildcats (15-7, 2-4) 6-0. A win would have given the Tigers their first sweep of an SEC opponent since May 19th, 2023 when they beat the Missouri Tigers in three straight games.
After starting out the season very well as the solidified Sunday starter, freshman Christian Chatterton ran into trouble for the second week in a row. After only going 3.1 innings in Auburn’s win against Vanderbilt last week, Chatterton could only manage a third of an inning in Lexington on Sunday. He gave up just two hits, but he walked two, hit one and gave up five earned runs.
Following Chatterton’s exit, the bullpen came in and gave the bats plenty of opportunities to get the Tigers back in the game. Dylan Watts gave the Tigers four huge scoreless innings, allowing just one hit to the 16 batters he faced. Carson Myers also came in and gave Auburn 1.2 scoreless frames.
However, the offense simply never came to life. The Tigers were held to just two hits, their lowest total of the season. The lone knocks came from veterans Ike Irish and Deric Fabian.
Other than the first and seventh innings, the Kentucky offense wasn’t particularly potent either. The five runs they scored in the first inning came from two walks, two sacrifice flies and an RBI single. Their six runs came on just six hits.
While the Tigers did lose the weekend close, they will be coming back from Lexington with their second conference series win of the season. That number already matches the amount of SEC series wins from a year ago when Auburn won their last two series of the season.
The Tigers will travel to Montgomery for a midweek showdown against South Alabama on Tuesday before continuing conference play on the road again next week, heading east to Athens, Georgia. The series against the fourth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs is set to begin Friday, March 28th. Radio coverage for all of these games can be found on the Auburn Sports Network.
