BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - It was a heartbreaker in Birmingham for the Auburn baseball team Wednesday night, as their 10-game winning streak came to an end with a walk off by the UAB Blazers in the ninth. The loss ended what had been an impressive last couple weeks for the Tigers.
Auburn started off hot, with both Eric Snow and Cooper McMurray hitting home runs in the top of the first. However, UAB would respond with three runs of their own in that same inning. Each of the two teams would trade runs over the next several innings, with neither team ending up separating the gap.
UAB would get their chance though. And former Auburn Tiger Wesley Helms hit the walk off single to close out what had been a tight ballgame.
It was a young gun on the mound for the Tigers, with freshman Andreas Alvarez getting the start and going 3.1 innings, giving up four runs on six hits, three walks, and three strikeouts. The lefty Carson Myers then came in to get Auburn out of the fourth, before Alex Petrovic and Parker Carlson each went 2.1 innings and gave up a run each, respectively. Lastly Jett Johnston came and would give up the walk off to UAB.
Offensively, most of Auburn's output came from the longball, with 3 of the 5 runs scored by the Tigers coming off solo shots. First baseman and cleanup hitter Cooper McMurray accounted for two of those himself. Other notable hitters include Lucas Steele, who went 2-4 with two RBIs, and the freshman Chase Fralick, who went 2-3 with a walk. Despite the 5 extra base hits, Auburn was unable to score more than a run or two at a time.
Auburn (11-2) looks to get back on track with a weekend series coming up against Old Dominion at plainsman park. First pitch is at 6 p.m. CST live on SEC Network+.
