ATHENS, Ga. – Auburn women’s basketball travels to play rivals Georgia tomorrow night in Athens in what is their final road matchup of the regular season. The Tigers will try to gain some momentum heading into the SEC Tournament where they will need to win to get in.
Auburn is coming off of a four game skid, three of which came against AP top 25 opponents. The most recent loss was a defeat in Tuscaloosa after leading 20-9 after the first quarter, but were outscored 57-30 over the final 30 minutes in a 66-50 loss to the Crimson Tide.
Auburn’s Deyona Gaston has continued to be the team’s main offensive weapon, averaging a third best 22 points per game in the SEC while also being top 10 in rebounds per game with 7.2. She had 19 points and 13 boards against Alabama and will look to capitalize on a Georgia team that doesn’t seem to have anyone to stop her. Other Tigers that will have to be on their game’s Thursday night are Marshaun Bostic and Celia Sumbane, who have been two of the main contributors outside of Deyona Gaston in the absence of Taliah Scott.
Georgia on the other hand, is one of only a couple SEC squads that boasts a worse record in conference play this year than Auburn. The Dawgs come in 2-12 in SEC matchups and have fell in three straight. Their last time out, they only managed 26 points against the No. 1 ranked Longhorns from Texas in a 57-26 loss.
Top scorer for UGA is Trinity Turner, who is scoring 12.6 per game on just 34.4% from the field. Their main threat from behind the arc comes in the form of De’Mauri Flournoy who is averaging 11.2 points per outing, but is shooting 40 percent from deep this season on over 140 shots taken. Mia Woolfook is the final double digit scorer on the Georgia team, averaging 10.6 off the bench during this campaign.
Both teams need it, only one can win it. Auburn versus Georgia is live tomorrow night, Feb. 27 at 5 p.m. CST. The game will be streamed live on SEC Network+.
