#6 Auburn (8-0-1) starts SEC with a 2-2 draw against the Vanderbilt Commadores (5-0-3)

Auburn tied Vanderbilt 2-2 in a hard-fought match, with both teams remaining undefeated as SEC play begins.

AUBURN, Ala. — The Auburn Tigers tied the Vanderbilt Commodores 2-2 tonight at the Auburn Sports Complex. Vanderbilt opened the scoring with a goal from Rachel Deresky in the 19th minute. Auburn responded with two goals: a header by Dylan Driver in the 28th minute, followed by a top-shelf strike from Syndnie Thibodaux with 90 seconds remaining in the first half. However, Vanderbilt had the final say with a bottom-left goal from Abi Brighton.

Auburn started the season perfectly, going 8-0 in non-conference play, but Coach Karen Hoppa emphasized, "It's a new season with the start of SEC play." SEC play or not, Auburn remained true to their aggressive playstyle, pushing the ball for the full 90 minutes. They continued to showcase their depth, a strength all season, with 15 Tigers seeing action under Coach Hoppa.

Coach Hoppa showed great confidence in her substitutes tonight. Even when Auburn trailed for the first time this season, she didn't shy away from utilizing the bench, which paid off for the Tigers as both goals came from players who didn’t start.

The Tiger defense revealed a vulnerability for the first time this season. Auburn hadn't conceded a goal before tonight. Vanderbilt's speedy strikers showed no fear, staying true to their aggressive approach, recording 16 shots. Prior to tonight, only Clemson had managed double-digit shots against Auburn, with 10 in the season opener.

The Tigers were not satisfied with the draw. Syndnie Thibodaux discussed how "[they] need to start faster," and Coach Hoppa echoed the sentiment, stating, "We've got to be better and more aggressive." The team's lack of complacency is certainly a positive sign, as they know they can and will improve as SEC play continues. Despite the bittersweet feeling of a draw, this Auburn squad has shown they will be a force to be reckoned with this season.

Vanderbilt was a tough opponent to open conference play. The Commodores remain undefeated and boast one of the best defenses in the SEC, with six shutouts and 24 goals this season.

The Tigers will continue SEC play on Sunday, September 22, at 2 p.m., when the Florida Gators visit the Plains. You can watch the game on SECN+ and listen on WEGL 91.1 FM or the Auburn Sports App.
