Auburn finishes War Eagle Classic 3-1 as they grab their 20th win of the year

AUBURN, Ala. - Auburn’s (20-12-1, 3-9) offensive resurgence continued in the War Eagle Classic as they grabbed three out of four in the weekend invitational. A day-two split resulted in the only loss of the weekend. Auburn started off the second day of the War Eagle Classic the same way they did the first day, with a win over Louisiana Tech (24-11, 7-5). The 5-0 win was the Tiger’s third of the weekend as they kept their impressive form running. In game two where the Tigers took on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (25-16, 9-6) the Tiger’s winning streak ended at five as they fell in game two of the day, a high-scoring affair that saw Georgia Tech able to outlast an Auburn comeback attempt.

Maddie Penta grabbed her second win of the weekend going all seven innings in game one. Penta had 15 strikeouts in the win, only allowing two hits, and throwing 111 pitches against 24 batters.

The Auburn offense was firing on all cylinders in game one with three runs in the first and twice in the fifth to secure the win. Icess Tresvik, Nelia Peralta, and Makayla Packer all had two hit game ones and Amelia Lech reached three times with one hit, a walk, and a hit by pitch.

Icess Tresvik led the Tigers with two RBIs in her impressive day. One in the first inning and one in the fifth both times driving in Makayala Packer. Tresvik also stole home on a designed first and third play.

Caroline Easom walked once with a hit and avoided the strikeout onslaught from Penta as she kept her strikeout number at just for the year in nearly 100 at-bats. Allanah Rogers had the only other hit for Louisiana Tech as they struggled to get their offense rolling against Penta’s dominant showing.

In game two Auburn’s impressive offense continued. Icess Tresvik had three hits in her four at-bats including a home run with two RBIs to complete her impressive day. Anna Wohlers was three of three with a home run at the plate also with two RBIs in the nine-run showing for the Tigers.

It came down to the seventh inning where the Tigers had the bases loaded and a tying run on first with one out, a Mariah Penta single that floated into the outfield to score two but a ground out to end it prevented the Tigers from finding late-inning magic for two days in a row.

It was pitching by committee in game two for the Tigers as Annabelle Widra got the start in the circle followed by Malayna Tambora and Emmah Rolfe. Widra took the loss having gone the first two innings giving up five runs all earned on six hits. The brunt of the work fell to Tambora however, as she went four innings giving up nine hits and five runs all earned. Emmah Rolfe closed down the Tech threat in the seventh to give the Tigers a chance in the bottom half of the frame.

The Tiger will be back in action Tuesday at home as they will host the UAB Blazers on April 10th for a 6 pm first pitch. The game will be available for Listening on WEGL 91.1 FM and the Auburn Sports app the game will be streaming on the SECN+ in conjunction with the Auburn Sports Network.
