Auburn ignited Plainsman Park with a resounding 12-8 win against Georgia Tech, breaking a challenging six-game losing streak. The Tigers didn't just win; they dominated, seizing control early in the game with a remarkable eight-run first inning. This explosive start set the tone for a much-needed triumph, delighting both players and fans alike.
"It's been a while since we tasted victory," Auburn head coach Butch Thompson said, acknowledging the team's struggle of late. "Every time we step onto the field, success is the goal. Despite recent setbacks, I'm proud of our players' resilience and commitment to the game."
Leading the offensive charge was Cooper Weiss, whose performance included two home runs, marking his first multi-homer game as a Tiger. Weiss's offensive prowess, coupled with driving in a season-high four runs, not only propelled Auburn to victory but also provided a much-needed morale boost for the team.
"We needed this win to break the losing streak," Weiss reflected on the team's collective effort. "But it's crucial that we carry this momentum forward into our upcoming games. Winning is our top priority every time we step onto the field."
Freshmen Eric Guevara and Cale Stricklin also made significant contributions, combining for five RBIs and showcasing their emerging talent. Guevara, in particular, highlighted his growing confidence at the plate, emphasizing the importance of enjoying the game amidst pressure-filled situations.
Despite a brief resurgence from Georgia Tech, Auburn remained steadfast. Pitchers Herberholz and Murphy provided crucial relief, while the offense continued to capitalize on scoring opportunities. Strategic pitching changes and timely hits ensured that the Tigers maintained their lead, ultimately securing a well-deserved victory.
"Our focus is on building upon this win and continuing to improve as we navigate through the challenges of the season" Thompson said.
Auburn will be back in action this weekend at Mississippi State in hopes to get a winnign streak going.
