Oklahoma-born roots rocker JD McPherson brought his crack band and a loose vibe to Waverly, Alabama on Feburary 25th. Playing the Little House at Standard Deluxe, McPherson said they were going to play some stuff they don’t normally play because “you’ve got this incredible place.” The band delivered an inspired mix of originals and covers, including his most well-known songs like “North Side Gal” off his debut album Signs & Signifiers, “Bossy,” “Lucky Penny” and “Head Over Heels.”
McPherson surprised most with some eclectic covers, including Iggy Pop’s “Lust for Life,” Nick Lowe’s “Rome Wasn’t Built In a Day” and “Suzie” by Richie Valens. Taking suggestions from the raucous and appreciative crowd (including his aunt), McPherson closed with “Let the Good Times Roll,” a standout
that highlighted the band’s ensemble playing and their confident ’50s R&B sound. “I wish there was more room to dance,” one member of the crowd said as the show broke up. It was the only complaint you would hear on this fun night of vintage rock and roll
