The No. 14 Auburn gymnastics team demonstrated resilience and determination as they secured a solid second-place finish at the 2024 Podium Challenge held in Baton Rouge. Despite facing adversity with sickness and injuries throughout the week, the team managed to achieve a commendable score of 197.050, showcasing their strength and resolve.
Auburn head coach Jeff Graba reflected on the team's performance, stating, "I think the team did really well considering some of the circumstances this week. Breaking a 197 on the road after all that is really good for this team." Graba acknowledged the challenges the team faced but commended their mental approach while also acknowledging areas for improvement, adding, "We still have some work left to do."
Fifth-year Cassie Stevens delivered an outstanding performance, finishing in a tie for second in the all-around with a score of 39.625. Her stellar performance included securing second place on beam with a score of 9.925 and tying for third on bars with a score of 9.9. Graba praised Stevens' consistency, noting, "That score is tied for her second-highest of the season," highlighting her valuable contribution to the team's success.
The Tigers commenced the meet on bars, posting a solid score of 49.125, with Stevens leading the charge with a score of 9.9. The team's performance on beam was exceptional, achieving a score of 49.425, the third-highest of the season. Stevens once again showcased her prowess, leading the way with a score of 9.925, supported by impressive performances from her teammates.
Auburn's momentum continued to build as they moved on to floor, scoring an impressive 49.475. McLaughlin's standout performance earned her a score of 9.925, contributing to the team's success alongside Stevens and Groth, who both scored 9.9s.
The team concluded the meet on vault with a score of 49.025, with Stevens delivering another strong performance with a score of 9.9. The Tigers demonstrated depth and skill across all events, with contributions from various team members.
Looking ahead, Auburn prepares for the final meet of the regular season at the inaugural Kidney Care Women’s Gymnastics Championship in Nashville. With determination and focus, the Tigers aim to continue their success as they face Kentucky, Ohio State, and Fisk on March 16.
