Auburn Falls to Alabama in Season Finale

Auburn, AL - A goal from Alabama forward Riley Tanner in the 86th minute of tonight's game seals the envelope on Auburn's season.

The Auburn Tigers (6-5-7, 2-5-3 SEC) took on the No. 3 Alabama Crimson Tide (16-1-1, 9-0 SEC) tonight at the Auburn Soccer Complex.

Auburn managed five shots in the first half, one of them being on-goal. Goalkeeper Maddie Prohaska had to make one save.

Alabama took four shots, also only having one on-goal. Goalkeeper McKinley Crone also had to make one save in the first half. The Crimson Tide also had one corner kick.

The second half saw two yellow cards: the first to Alabama midfielder Felica Knox for persistent infringement, and the second to Auburn midfielder Hannah Waesch for unsporting. These came in the 75th and 86th minutes respectively.

Tanner's game-deciding goal came seconds after the second yellow card.

"Unfortunate to give up a goal late but a tie wouldn't have helped us so we had to go for the win," Auburn head coach Karen Hoppa said on her decision to push the team upfield which ultimately led to the late goal being scored.

Auburn finished with 12 shots, only three of them being on-goal. Prohaska made five total saves for the Tigers. Auburn was also called for six fouls and had six corner kick chances.

Alabama ended up taking 14 shots, six of them being on-goal. Crone finished with three saves. The Crimson Tide had nine fouls called on them, had six corner kick opportunities, and were called offside five times.

"They played great. They left everything they had on the field. We were missing that same piece that we've been missing all year," Hoppa said on her team's performance. "We had the chances, we had plenty of chances and we couldn't finish."
