This week’s featured DJ is Rio, a freshman studying Neuroscience with a minor in Dance. She has been a DJ for WEGL since the start of her freshman year in the fall of 2021. Her show, Lost MP3, currently runs every Tuesday from 3-4 p.m. – showcasing a mix of early 2000s pop, hip hop, club hits and modern pop songs.
This week, I would like to introduce both readers and listeners of WEGL to Rio, a free-flowing girl in a world full of music.
When did you first hear about WEGL?
Rio’s dad is an alumnus of Auburn University and influenced her to look into WEGL based on the wonderful people involved in the organization. She also personally took interest in joining a major influential student involvement team on campus as a way to meet new people and begin networking.
How long have you been with WEGL? What’s your favorite memory?
Rio joined WEGL at the start of the 2021 fall semester and has been vastly involved since – stating how she spends a lot of her extra time hangout in the WEGL studio – especially in the bullpen. She says it’s “an amazing way to meet and be with everyone.” During her time here, she’s been able to see and support tons of local artists through WEGLs “Concerts on Campus” events and has also helped DJing around the Auburn Arena during this year’s basketball season to keep the crowds hyped up for the game.
What’s your favorite way to listen to music?
She loves listening to music, especially during her shows because she can have it as loud as she wants and gives her a chance to chill out after a long day in classes. She also shared that she loves walking on campus with headphones on because it gives her a chance to be in her “own little world.” Also, as an avid people watcher, Rio says that she likes to create little stories for the people she sees and connects it to the songs she listens to.
If there was one artist/band you could see live in concert, alive or dead, who would it be?
For Rio, this question was hard to answer since she’d love to see so many of her favorite artists/bands live in concert – those ranging from N.W.A. to the Beastie Boys. However, she said her final answer would “definitely have to be The Ramones.”
Do you have an all-time favorite artist or band?
“My all-time favorite band is probably Pink Floyd probably because they’re so versatile and timeless.”
What type of music do you like listening to the most?
“I listen to Rock the most, but I basically listen to everything.”
Are you involved with any other organizations on campus?
Rio is involved in WEGL, Dance Marathon, and a member of Auburn’s Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.
What do you want your listeners to know about you and/or your show?
About her show: “I overall want more listener input – have listeners put in song recommendations and play them on my show.”
About her: Rio has been a dancer for over 15 years, specializing in Jazz and Ballet. Overall, her whole life has been surrounded by music; from dance to DJing.
FUN FACT ALERT!
Rio is actually not her real birth name, but instead was inspired by a song from the 80s that her dad fell in love with.
