Concert Review: Phoebe Bridgers at Avondale Brewing Company

October 4th, 2021 | Birmingham, AL

Phoebe Bridgers rocked out a sold out crowd of 3,000 in Birmingham last night with support from Taylor Hollingsworth. The show celebrated Birmingham Mountain Radio's 10th (+1) Anniversary.

The four time Grammy Award nominated artist brought a dedicated crowd, many of which waited in line for hours to see her. Personally, this was the biggest line and largest crowd I've ever seen at Avondale Brewing Company. Despite a rain delay and lightning evacuation, the show went on. The venue was able to extend out their cut-off time in order for both Phoebe and Taylor to play their full sets.

Phoebe has made waves in the past couple of years within the indie-sphere and larger musical landscape. Her "6 minute long songs about suicidal thoughts" and layered instrumentals create and atmosphere of sadness, but with a glimmer of hope at the end. Her and her band were on point. Guitars, bass, drums, keys, trumpet, violin, they all worked in unison without missing a beat. Vocally, Phoebe sounded just like her recordings in the best possible way.

Local indie rock staple Taylor Hollingsworth kicked off the show. His unique brand of songwriting helped captivate the audience, even though he wasn't on the bill until long after tickets had sold out. Around the middle of his set, he played one of his songs, "Dominos". Much to mine and many other's surprise, this song was actually covered by Phoebe on her project with Conor Oberst, Better Oblivion Community Center.

Phoebe's set was a doozy, covering all her hits and then some. Some notable songs were of course "Motion Sickness" and "Kyoto", but also the addition of "Me & My Dog", a song by boygenius, the collaboration between Phoebe, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker. Phoebe also covered Bo Burham's "That Funny Feeling", which she recently released as a single to raise money for the Texas Abortion Fund. Taylor Hollingsworth played guitar on the final two songs.

It also would not have been a Phoebe Bridgers show without some good stage banter and a few bras thrown her way. It was great to welcome her back to the Iron City (the last time she played here was at the Syndicate Lounge in 2018, an underground dive)! Hoping to see more of Phoebe soon, she's definitely one not to miss.
