On Sunday, Carlton Davis and Jamel Dean will become the latest Auburn Tigers to play in the Super Bowl. Super Bowl LV will be the sixth consecutive Super Bowl with a former Tiger playing on the biggest stage in football. In total, 36 former Auburn players have seen the field in at least one Super Bowl.
Davis and Dean have been anchors for a surging Buccaneers defense this season. The two combined for 130 total tackles in the regular season as well as five interceptions, and Davis has developed into one of the league's best cornerbacks. Dean holds the Tampa Bay franchise record for passes defended by a rookie with 17.
Davis and Dean will be playing on a familiar field against the Chiefs. With their win over the Packers in the NFC Championship Game, the Buccaneers became the first team in NFL history to advance to the Super Bowl when their home city has hosted the game. Although it won't be a packed home crowd in attendance, it'll surely be a luxury that most NFL players have never had.
Auburn has had at least one player in a Super Bowl nearly every year since 1999. Two players, Brandon King and Jonathan Jones, have played in three Super Bowls, reaching the big game three years in a row from 2017-2019 as part of the New England Patriots. The pair won two of those three Super Bowls. LB Mike Kolen also played in three consecutive Super Bowls from 1971-1973 with the Miami Dolphins, also winning two out of three.
Super Bowl LV kicks off Sunday, February 7th at 5:30 p.m. from Tampa, Florida. Tampa Bay will be looking to hoist their second Lombardi Trophy in franchise history, while the Kansas City Chiefs are seeking their third Super Bowl victory (and second in a row).
