Auburn’s women’s basketball team fell 83-63 to Florida on Thursday night, and the Tigers remain winless in SEC play.
For Coach Flo, the message to the media post-game was clear.
“We’re not going to beat anyone giving up 83 points,” Coach Flo said.
Florida’s 83 points are tied for third-most scored on Auburn all season. The Tigers previously gave up 83 to Drake, 86 to Arkansas and 89 to Old Dominion. The Tigers are 14 games into their season, and seven games have seen the opponent score 80 or more points. Auburn’s record in those seven games? 1-6.
Auburn previously went through a stretch of 82 games prior to this season, starting on Dec. 16, 2016, where they had allowed 80-plus points seven times.
The Tigers tied their season-high in three-point shots on the night, with 29 attempts. They made seven of them, led by Erin Howard who was 3-of-6 from beyond the arc.
“That’s not [shooting 29 threes] what we’re supposed to do. That’s not what we are, that’s not who we are, that’s not what we should be doing,” Coach Flo said.
A tough night from the three point range, combined with what Coach Flo calls “horrible defense” keeps Auburn (6-8) winless in the SEC. The Tigers have a few days to get ready for rival Alabama, who comes to town on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. in Auburn Arena.
What is the key to get the team ready for Alabama? A simple answer from Coach Flo:
“Play defense. [The team] has to buy into playing defense. If [The team] looks at the past tense of our program, we’ve played defense, and we’ve won because we played defense.”
